Can we get just a little healthier?

I was wondering today why it seems normal these days for kids and adults alike to be dealing on a daily basis with so many healthy problems. I certainly am not immune to this phenomenon. While I personally have experience pretty good health my family could be healthier.

Today I was telling a story- a true story but one that I started thinking why did this happen in the first place. I am sure not all of my readers have children so I am going to elaborate on something- Children these days are bombarded with unhealthy food- chips, cookies, crackers, Juice loaded with Sugar, pre-made pastry that is more chemical than food. Secondly mommies and daddys aren’t always on the same page when it comes to nutrition and their children. So when I try to promote healthy eating daddy may sneak some unhealthy food while I’m not home. I have known other children who will only eat chicken nuggets and mac and cheese for years. Obesity, heart disease, high cholesterol, high blood pressure and type II diabetes are not just adult diseases anymore.

My Son who is only 4- has been taking a whole food nutrition supplement for two months now because he does not always eat the way that he should. This is something that as a family we are working on. He has also been dealing with digestion issues. in the past he would live on the Mac and cheese, cheese, milk, processed food camouflaged as “healthy” and maybe if I was lucky some fruit pouches. He had trouble going to the bathroom and even had bleeding when he would go. Multiple visits to the DR and there is nothing wrong other than constipation and a poor diet. So my first question to all my mom readers out there… how do you get your 4 year old to eat better and keep your sanity…? The answer most frequently to that is YOU DON’T. So as a Dental Hygienist I was exposed to this whole food nutritional supplement that makes it in a chew form for kids- all natural- organic farming methods- gluten free ect. I figured why not? I thought it tasted good and Luckily so does my son.

So for the two months he has been on this some amazing things have been happening… I come home from work and my husband tells me… Jenn you aren’t going to believe this but little man ate some of your mixed nuts today. And I discovered that he loved dried cranberries, apple slices, sweet potato, and now fights me much less when I tell him to at least try a new vegetable. While I encouraged it he is now drinking at least 16 ounces of water a day. He is now eating yogurts with the good bacteria and if he doesn’t get his little gummy snack of fruits and veggies he asks for it because it made his poop better. The sadness of being the working parent is that you don’t get all the family news every day and as good as my husband is I am not always updated on everything. I know that the change in his diet has been what has helped his digestive issues but I know that his fruit and veggie supplement is why he is now choosing healthier for you non processed foods on his own!

Please I urge my readers to read what we are putting into our bodies. I promise you as good as you think it tastes you can make it healthier and better tasting at home. Try to avoid the High Fructose corn syrup also called corn sugar – and think about juicing or taking a whole food nutritional supplement – what kind of example are we giving our children- I urge you to think- variety and color when you eat- when you think white think what is this giving me? Your body is your temple- either you create health or disease with the choices you make… choose wisely…foodrainbow-850x400
